If You’re Switched on You’ll Switch Off

October 24, 2017

The NHS has been making slow but steady progress towards a paperless future. The latest development in their transformation comes from Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (OUH), whose respective hospital sites who have officially switched off their fax machines.

To that, we at ProcessFlows say congratulations! Fax machines have long been a pain point in the NHS when it comes to efficiency and costs, but OUH is actually one of the first trusts to make the leap and get rid of fax machines altogether.

The thing is, though – they can get rid of hardware, but can they really get rid of fax?

The Trust was able to get rid of fax machines because in their case, NHSmail secure email system implementation took off and allowed a smooth transition. It is used widely enough across Oxfordshire health services that a decision regarding fax machine usage could be made.

But as always, there’s a rub.

Fax is still one of the most relied upon forms of secure communications, not just in the UK but in the world.

Can the NHS really afford to turn its back on the guaranteed safekeeping of sensitive patient data?

That’s why there’s an option that NHS organisations are turning to: switch off the fax machines, but keep fax. By moving fax onto a server, they can still send data safely without having to move autonomous health professionals onto a whole new system; at the same time they can switch off fax machines. What does this result in? Lower overheads for maintenance, less burden on IT staff, and faster data transmissions as faxes can be sent from desktop and other devices. What’s more, there is no awkward transition for health professionals and surgeries who can keep using their preferred method of communication.

If need fax but don’t want the expensive hardware that comes with it, consider RightFax.
